The Art of Hoop Dancing was taught to me from my Older Brother Nakotah LaRance, Whom first learned from Derrick Suwaima Davis. At the age of 8 years old, I was performing the Hoop Dance with my Two Brothers( Nakotah and Cree). Traveling around Turtle Island with my Mother Marian Denipah-LaRance, and Father Steve LaRance, who are Native American Jewelers. We traveled frequently to Art Shows, Native American Festivals, Pow-Wows and competed annually in The World Champion Hoop Dance Competition held in Phoenix Arizona every year.
Hoop Dance Originated in Taos, New Mexico. Growing up, we were taught that Hoop Dancing was originally a Healing Ceremony. Usually performed only by medicine men, they would dance this sacred ritual to help heal you if you were feeling physically, mentally, or spiritually unwell. Opposed to the plastic hoops we use today, they would originally make their hoop of Willow Reed.
